Last night we had the pleasure of hosting two of our friends for dinner. It was their first time at our house, so we wanted to give a good impression - we cooked, we cleaned, we went the whole nine yards!! It was a little unnerving because these two individuals are younger, hipper and better looking than we are, and we aren't entirely sure why they would want to hang out with us.

As the night progressed and more wine was drunk, things became clear. In spite of his boyish good looks and charm, the King of Kareoke is in fact a little on the geeky side. I know, i know, his newly minted M.Sc. in Geophysics should have tipped me off to this before hand, but what can i say, sometimes i miss the obvious. So while the Brain and Kareoke chuckled to themselves about the intricacies of induced polarization and the perils of maxmin, Miss Bulgaria 2004 and i slid into the next room to look at Otis the cat. In a moment of silence she confessed to me that she had never seen this side of the King, i assured her that at least in the Brain, such behaviour only comes out in good company. I think she was relieved. At any rate, Otis was happy because she kept petting him.

After joining up with the boys again, another startling admission of geekdom by the King was uttered. I won't bore you with the details, but it has something to do with longitude and latitude confluences and other some other guys that will be familiar to the EOS crowd. And it is laugh out loud funny.

no comment on the discuss, but a comment on the ridiculous nature of not-so-sooper supers. they suck. time, wonder-at-the-world, excitement and exasperated breaths right out of you.

i too am virtually alone in my fumblings with too much data and not enough patience, too much ambition and not enough apathy. and what the phuck is a MANOVA?! alas, i must do something.

so what have i done? i've bought a business, signed up to volunteer with disabled adults, began writing several short stories, vowed to love my husband more, aimed for unachievable amounts of cycling each week, taut triceps cuz of the darned tattoos on them and i will be reading all blogs by all friends. do you see thesis in there anywhere? nope. but i'm busy.

does it really matter? nope. if you gotta quit, you gotta do that. if you think you need to finish because you want to and you really did enjoy everything you've learned so far, you should blast it out. don't turn to your sucker anymore. you're all you got in this rat race. go for you... and don't forget the cat and the brain if they wanna come.

You wanna talk geekdom? I am reading your blog at 10 PM on a Friday night, while our neighbours downstairs and the party house cross the street are all having rip-roarin' parties!

Anyway - you guys are way cooler and hipper than you think. I mean, who started this whole blog craze in the first place? And what other geophysicist can make me laugh till I pee? the Brain makes rocks cooler than THE ROCK!

As our wise young friend Shrooms (just guessing here) said above, you need to haul ass and finish the diss. You may feel good about quittin' in the short term, but ladies like us... well you may eventually feel like a quitter.

Did Shrooms stop cycling just because she broke a few helmets and was told never to do it again? Hell no! Do I think she's crazy? Hell yes! But her strong physique and involvement in all things physical inspires awe in me -- much in the way your thirst for knowledge and sheer brain power does for me too. (BTW, if you had done your degrees in Lit , you woulda been done by now - teehee)

Don't give up. Follow the path you set out upon. Finish and THEN tinker with what the heck you want to do with your life. Finishing doesn't mean you have to have a definite answer to that question (I do recommend What should I Do With My Life by Po Bronson though). We're meant to change our minds a billion times. That's the affliction of our generation. And the great thing is, the reason for this social disease is that we are fortunate enough to have a choice. So take your time, choose wisely, but go for that finish line.

Forever your friend in blogdom,
Scarbie
